One piece of toast costs $0.4 and one egg costs $ 1.25.

Explanation:

Let cost of egg be #E# and that of toast be #T#

Jimmy buys 1 egg and 1 piece of toast for $1.65 can be expressed as:

#1E +1T = $1.65#--------------equation (1)

Bob buys 2 eggs and 1 piece of toast for $2.90 can be expressed as :

#2E + 1T = $2.90# -------------- equation (2)

Eliminate any one variable, say #T#,

(2)-(1) gives:

#=> #2E -1E +1T-1T = $2.90 - $1.65#

#=> 1E = $1.25#------------(3)

To get #T#, substitute this value of cost of 1 egg in any one equation, say equation (1):

#=> 1 xx $1.25 +1T = $1.65#

#=> 1T = 1.65 - 1.25 = $0.4#-------------(4)

From (3) and (4),

One piece of toast costs $0.4 and one egg costs $ 1.25.
