To stop Communism

Explanation:

Although being against some ideals, both were stopping Communism in Afghanistan. Not only would this be bad in general, but also it would help the USA stick to the Truman Doctrine in which they promised to stop the spread of Communism.
Also the Afghanistan war was another chance for proxy war and winning these was important, so if the USA got involved, they could then try to win and better the Soviets.
Finally it was a good opportunity for the USA to show their economic power to the world, especially the Communists.
