Before we can do anything we want to change -1/3 into a value that matches the denominator of the other fraction -5/6. We can write -1/3 as -2/6 because they both equal the same value but it is easier to now find what u equals.

Adding 5/6 to both sides gives us:

-2/6 + 5/6 = u (Because the denominator is the same we just add the numerators/ top numbers)

(-2 + 5)/6 = u which gives 3/6 = u.

We can simplify 3/6 to 1/2 so:

u = 1/2

Hope this helps!
