More than one answer to this question

Explanation:

There is more than one answer to this question and even the answer I am giving has been debated by theologians over the years. I would say Baghdad was THE major seat of learning in the Muslim world. Over 1000 years ago Mamun (forgive the spelling) was the Prince/Caliph ruler of the city and he championed science and knowledge.
He developed Kalam which is a form of debate that allowed Muslim scholars to debate religion with their Christian and Jewish counterparts. Europe was deep in to the Dark age, yet the Muslim world at this time was vast and driven by people like Mamun was learned.
Mamun also went on to build Bayt-al hikma (spelling?) which is the Library of wisdom, or a similar name. Where this was built is debatable, but it makes sense that it was built in Baghdad.

I am unsure how Islam influenced this though, perhaps someone else can answer that one.
