since this is a simultaneous equation, i assume you want to find the values of #x# and #y#.

#y - x = 4#
#x+y = 10#

you can put #y# on its own, on both sides:

#x+y = 10#
#y = 10-x#

#y - x = 4#
#y = x+4#

#y = 10-x#, #y = x+4 -> 10-x=x+4#

subtract #10#:

#-x= x-6#

add #x#:

#2x - 6 = 0#
add #6#:

#2x = 6#

divide by #2#:

#x = 3#

then, put #3# as #x# in the second equation:

#x+y = 10#
#3 + y =10#

subtract #3#:
#y = 7#
