In 1986 , the last leader of the Soviet Union , Mikhail Gorbachev , devised this ingenious term as a political slogan.
It was a prime reformation of the Perestroika (political movement)
Main targets of the Glasnost :
- achieve greater government transparency and increased "openness" in foreign affairs with the world
- welcome globalization
- grow independence and autonomy
The Glasnost helped in increasing freedom of speech and a strong social will for autonomy in Russian states as patriotism had been lost between its people who seeked for occidentalization .
It did not succeed in maintaining the Communist Party nor the Soviet Union. Lots of experts suggest that Perestroika led by Gorbachev put an end to the USSR in 1991 .
