One very large difference between alkanes and alkenes is that alkenes contain a double bond i.e. C=C while alkanes are only made up of single C—C bonds.
This C=C presence in alkenes allows them to undergo more reactions than the alkanes.
One significant test to determine if a compound is an alkane or alkene is to react the compound with liquid bromine in an organic solvent.
The alkene decolourises the bromine (solution turns from brown to colourless) while the alkane shows no visible reaction with the bromine liquid.
