Use order of operations:

= #1/2 + 1/2 + (1/2 * 1/2) - 1/2#
= #1/2 + 1/2 + 1/4 - 1/2#
= #1 + 1/4 - 1/2#
= #5/4 - 1/2#
= #3/4#

Alternatively, you could have easily simplified the equation to make it look neater and thus, easier to work through:

= # 1 + (1/2)^2 - 1/2#
= # 1 + 1/4 - 1/2#
= #5/4 - 1/2#
= #3/4#

Or... You could have converted it to decimals - even easier!

= #1 + (0.5)^2 - 0.5#
= #1 + 0.25 - 0.5#
= #1.25 - 0.5#
= #0.75#
