All three are fossil fuels that are non-renewable resources and all three are contributing to global climate change. They are used in different applications.

Coal is almost exclusively used to generate electricity and puts out the most CO2 of the three fossil fuels. Oil is used almost exclusively for fuel in the transportation sector (cars, buses, trains, planes, etc.) and is also a significant source of CO2. Natural gas is used for power generation and in North America is actually replacing coal for this application. Natural gas is also used for making cement, heating homes and making plastic products.
