Combine like terms and isolate the variable.

Get all the terms with #p# on the left side of the #=# sign and everything else on the right.

#p - 5p - 4p = - 8 + 2#

combine like terms

#-8p = -6#

divide both side by #-8# to get only #p# on the left

#(-8p)/(-8) = (-6)/(-8)#

#p = 6/8# (6/8 is positive because two negatives is a positive)

reduce to lowest terms

#p = 3/4#
