Explanation:
I will stick to established fact and stay away from opinion. Japan viewed the Chinese as less than human. This point of view was propogated from the top down, even taught to children in schools. Therefore when imperial Japan first started to spread it's wings China was a natural target and they were not prepared. This lead to what is commonly (outside of Japan) referred to as the 'rape of Nanjig/Nanking'
The Japanese occupiers seemed to have absolutely no regard for Chinese lives. Women were taken and held in military brothels, rape in the street was not unknown either. Men were executed in the middle of the street usually using a Katana sword. For a very long time this part of history was not taught, talked about or acknowledged in any way shape or form in Japan. It is only recently that the Japanese Gov' have expressed regret. The Chinese have long campaigned for official acknowledgement of what they consider a war crime.
