A vast amount of early life were invertebrates (had no backbone) contained matter that decomposed entirely on their death. It is extremely rare to find evidence of their existence in the fossil record.

Most of the vertebrates died and their bodies and bones were eaten or decomposed where that happened. Some vertebrates were washed away in floods, deposited in muds and subsequently fossilised in the rocks that formed over millions of years.

These account for many of the fossils we find today. So, no, most life has left no fossil records.
