It's a tragedy (play or narrative or otherwise) written in the Elizabethan era (vaguely 1500s-1600s? around there) and it is normally a story that makes the audience think about mortality.

Take Hamlet, for example. Hamlet is an Elizabethan tragedy written by William Shakespeare. The point in Hamlet is not to make people laugh (although it is quite funny at few parts), but rather, to think about how our actions affect the outcome of our lives and about how death is inevitable, et cetera.
