Both sodium chloride and sodium hydroxide are ionic compounds which means that they are composed of a metal piece and a non-metal piece. The metal is sodium. In solution, sodium dissociates into sodium ions Na +1. Chlorine and hydroxide are non-metals. In solution they dissociate into chlorine ions Cl -1 and hydroxide ions OH -1. All of these ions find their way to the cathode and anode where they complete a circuit and conduct electricity.
