I am not sure if my answer is too basic but anyway;
Cathode rays are beams made up of electrons emitted by a hot metal filament (maintained at negative potential) moving into an evacuated container.

In the filament heat produces agitation of the atoms of the lattice; this can cause the ejection of electrons from the metal. These are repelled by the negative potential at which the filament is connected and attracted by the positive one of the Anode, thus, creating a beam of electrons moving from the cathode to the anode.

You can “see” the evacuated tube in old TV sets that were very large to accommodate the length of it.
