A simple anion only has one element. For example, sodium cation or chlorine anion. Notice, there is only sodium present in the sodium cation or only chlorine present in the chlorine anion.
But, there is something called "polyatomic anion". They have atoms of different elements covalently bonded together, the whole lot having an overall charge.
